Paint/Coloring Books

Here is my collection of Little Lulu paint/coloring books. You may click on the thumbnail to see a larger picture.

These are my oldest Little Lulu coloring books - or actually, paint books, #669 and #1122-15. Both were printed by Whitman Publishing Company in Racine, Wisconsin with a 1944 copyright by Marjorie Henderson Buell. They are based on the Saturday Evening Post Lulu. The book #669 has 126 pages and #1122-15 has 192 pages. Here is a sample page.

Here is another Whitman paint book, #684, with a 1946 copyright by Marjorie Henderson Buell. This one is also based upon the Saturday Evening Post Lulu. See a sample page. This book has 96 pages.

Here is another Whitman paint book, #1149, with a 1946 copyright by Marjorie Henderson Buell. This one is also based upon the Saturday Evening Post Lulu. Here are also some sample pages from this book. This book has 96 pages.

Here is the another paint book I have. This one is also printed by Whitman and has a 1951 copyright by Marjorie Henderson Buell. Notice the similarity in the way Little Lulu is written on this book with the first paint book above - with brush strokes. The Lulu on this cover is more like the Lulu from the comic books of the 50s; however, the pages inside are similar to those in the 1946 paint book based on the Lulu in the Saturday Evening Post - in fact, some of the pages are identical. Of interest also is that there are two full pages of advertising for Kleenex - on the inside front cover and on the back cover. Lulu is not featured in the advertising. This book has only 13 pages. It appears to be an advertisement give away.

This Whitman coloring book #1258 has a 1955 copyright by Marjorie Henderson Buell. The Lulu in this book has evolved to the Lulu I remember from the comic books. This book has 64 pages and sold for 15 cents.

This Whitman coloring book #1186:25 has a 1955 copyright by Marjorie Henderson Buell. The Lulu in this book has evolved to the Lulu from the comic books of the 50s. This book has 110 pages. Here are some sample pages.

This Whitman #1134 coloring book has a 1959 copyright by Marjorie Henderson Buell., and sold for 29 cents. It has 116 pages. See a sample page. I have another coloring book, #1022, that is the same inside and has the same picture on the cover; however the title has changed from Marge's Little Lulu and Tubby Coloring Book to Marge's Little Lulu Coloring Book. In addition, the Whitman logo is different, the print has changed, and this one sold for 39 cents. Unfortunately, the first page is torn from this second book, so I do not have the copyright date for it.

This coloring book, #1663, has a 1974 copyright by Western Publishing Company, Inc., Racine, Wisconsin. It sold for 69 cents and has 128 pages. Here is a sample page from this book.

This is the 1990 reprint by A Golden Book, Western Publishing Company, of the 1973 Western coloring book. This book, #2948, has 48 pages and no price - just a bar code on the back. See a sample page from this book.

This is a very little coloring book, about 4" x 5". It is by Hallmark with a Whitman copyright (but no date - it appears to be from the early 1970s) and matches the Hallmark party supplies (see my napkins and tablecloth). This book has only 8 pictures, printed on only one side of the paper. It appears it was a party favor with that set. Here is a sample page from this little book.

This is another little Hallmark coloring book with a Whitman copyright. It also has no date, but appears to be from the early 1970s.This book has 24 pages, which are about 4" x 5". Below are some of the pages from this book.
