This paint book by Whitman with a 1951 copyright by Marjorie Henderson Buell appears to be an advertisement give away. There are two full pages of advertising for Kleenex - on the inside front cover and on the back cover. Lulu is not featured in the advertising. The Lulu on this cover is more like the Lulu from the comic books of the 50s; however, the pages inside are similar to those in a 1946 paint book based on the Lulu in the Saturday Evening Post - in fact, some of the pages are identical. This book has only 13 pages. It appears to be an advertisement give away. The pictures below show the front cover, and the front cover of another undated book with the name of a drug store printed on the front. Click here to see the inside front cover and first page, and the back cover.
This Whitman Marge's Little Lulu Coloring Book #1166:15 appears to be from the early-mid 50s. The page with the copyright has part of it cut out on my book, so I cannot read the date. (If anyone has this book with the copyright date intact, I would love to hear from you with the date). Lulu is like that of the comics as in the coloring books from 1955 rather than the Saturday Evening Post Lulu as in the books from the 1940s. The Whitman Logo is like the books of the 50s, and the Little Lulu title is more similar to those of 1955 than to those of 1959. The first page inside has Little Lulu written like that on the 1951 paint book above. This book does not have the price printed on the front of the book as does most of those from 1955 on. My copy of this book has 54 pages. Some of the pages have pictures similar to covers of some of the comics.
This Whitman coloring book #1186:25, Marge's Little Lulu Coloring Book, has a 1955 copyright by Marjorie Henderson Buell. The Lulu in this book is similar to the Lulu from the comic books of the 50s. This book has 110 pages. Here are some sample pages.
Marge's Little Lulu Coloring Book #1258, another Whitman book, has a 1955 copyright by Marjorie Henderson Buell. The Lulu in this book is also the Lulu from the comic books of the 50s. This book has 64 pages and sold for 15 cents.
This Whitman Marge's Little Lulu and Tubby Coloring Book #1134 has a 1959 copyright by Marjorie Henderson Buell., and sold for 29 cents. It has at least 126 pages (some may be missing). See a sample page. I have two other Little Lulu coloring books with the same picture on the front. One, Marge's Little Lulu Coloring Book #1022, appears identical to this one except for the change in title and a change in the Whitman logo. This book sold for 39 cents, and was likely from the late 60s or very early 70s. The other book with the same picture is titled Little Lulu and Friends to Color #1042-3-49 cents. It has only 60 pages, which all appear to be from the earlier books with this cover. The copyright for this book is 1959 by Western Publishing Company, Inc. It appears this book is from 1972-74.
Marge's Tubby Coloring Book #2946, a Whitman book with a 1963 copyright by Marjorie Henderson Buell, sold for 10 cents. It has 32 pages. Although the title is Tubby, the book includes pictures of Lulu and the other characters just as those coloring books titled Little Lulu.
Marge's Little Lulu Coloring Book #1022 appears identical to Marge's Little Lulu and Tubby Coloring Book #1134 (shown above) except for the change in title and a change in the Whitman logo. This 126-page book sold for 39 cents, and was likely from the late 60s or very early 70s. The third book with the same picture is titled Little Lulu and Friends to Color #1042-3-49 cents. It has only 60 pages, which all appear to be from the earlier books with this cover. The copyright for that book is 1959 by Western Publishing Company, Inc., and it appears that book is from 1972-74.
